One of the greatest sounding names of a place ever. Right up there with Djibouti if you ask me. Unfortunately the name of Burundi's capital city was the country's only highlight.
Things looked good when people kept buying me fruit on the bus over from Rwanda, and Lake Tanganyika, nestled in front of the Zaire Mountains, came into view to set up a dramatic entrance to this tiny country. But the place itself was a hole and no one could travel after a certain time because it was too dangerous. There was nothing of worth, except perhaps the apparent site of the Livingstone-Stanly meeting and 'another' source of the Nile, both too much effort to go and visit.
I feel lucky that I was only there for 2 days before my visa expired, forcing me to end my short excursion and return to the safety of Rwanda.
